Some buggy systems can machine check when config space accesses
happen for some non existent devices. i386/x86-64 do some early
device scans that might trigger this. Allow pci=noearly to disable
this. Also when type 1 is disabling also don't do any early
accesses which are always type1.
This moves the pci= configuration parsing to be a early parameter.
I don't think this can break anything because it only changes
a single global that is only used by PCI.

This patch replaces the open-coded early commandline parsing
throughout the i386 boot code with the generic mechanism (already used
by ppc, powerpc, ia64 and s390). The code was inconsistent with
whether it deletes the option from the cmdline or not, meaning some of
these will get passed through the environment into init.
This transformation is mainly mechanical, but there are some notable
parts:
1) Grammar: s/linux never set's it up/linux never sets it up/
2) Remove hacked-in earlyprintk= option scanning. When someone
actually implements CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK, then they can use
early_param().
[AK: actually it is implemented, but I'm adding the early_param it in the next
x86-64 patch]
3) Move declaration of generic_apic_probe() from setup.c into asm/apic.h
4) Various parameters now moved into their appropriate files (thanks Andi).
5) All parse functions which examine arg need to check for NULL,
except one where it has subtle humor value.

ACPI 3.0 appended a variable length UID string to the LAPIC structure
as part of support for > 256 processors. So the BAD_MADT_ENTRY() sanity
check can no longer compare for equality with a fixed structure length.

A BIOS has been found that resumes from S3 to the routine that invoked suspend,
ignoring the resume vector. This appears to the OS as a failed S3 attempt.
This same system suspend/resume's properly with Windows.
It is possible to invoke the protected mode register restore routine (which
would normally restore the sysenter registers) when the BIOS returns from
S3. This has no effect on a correctly running system and repairs the
damage from the deviant BIOS.

Implemented header file support for the following
additional ACPI tables: ASF!, BOOT, CPEP, DBGP, MCFG, SPCR,
SPMI, TCPA, and WDRT. With this support, all current and
known ACPI tables are now defined in the ACPICA headers and
are available for use by device drivers and other software.
Implemented support to allow tables that contain ACPI
names with invalid characters to be loaded. Previously,
this would cause the table load to fail, but since
there are several known cases of such tables on
existing machines, this change was made to enable
ACPI support for them. Also, this matches the
behavior of the Microsoft ACPI implementation.

optimization in the 20060317 release. The namespace
node definition required additional reorganization and
an internal datatype that had been changed to 8-bit was

Fixed a memory mapping leak during the deletion of
a SystemMemory operation region where a cached memory
mapping was not deleted. This became a noticeable problem
for operation regions that are defined within frequently

Reorganized the ACPI table header files into two main
files: one for the ACPI tables consumed by the ACPICA core,
and another for the miscellaneous ACPI tables that are
consumed by the drivers and other software. The various
FADT definitions were merged into one common section and

This patch fixes a kernel panic during boot that occurs on NVIDIA platforms
that have HPET enabled.
When HPET is enabled, the standard timer IRQ is routed to IOAPIC pin 2 and is
advertised as such in the ACPI APIC table - but an earlier workaround in the
kernel was ignoring this override. The fix is to honor timer IRQ overrides
from ACPI when HPET is detected on an NVIDIA platform.

The system has multiple PCI segments and we don't handle that properly
yet in PCI and ACPI. Short term before this is fixed blacklist it to

When nolapic was passed or the local APIC was disabled
for another reason ACPI would still parse the IO-APICs
until these were explicitely disabled with noapic.
Usually this resulted in a non booting configuration unless
"nolapic noapic" was used.
I also disabled the local APIC parsing in this case, although
that's only cosmetic (suppresses a few printks)
This hopefully makes nolapic work in all cases.

Almost all users of the table addresses from the EFI system table want
physical addresses. So rather than doing the pa->va->pa conversion, just keep
physical addresses in struct efi.
This fixes a DMI bug: the efi structure contained the physical SMBIOS address
on x86 but the virtual address on ia64, so dmi_scan_machine() used ioremap()
on a virtual address on ia64.
This is essentially the same as an earlier patch by Matt Tolentino:

except that this changes all table addresses, not just ACPI addresses.
Matt's original patch was backed out because it caused MCAs on HP sx1000
systems. That problem is resolved by the ioremap() attribute checking added

ATI chipsets tend to generate double timer interrupts for the local APIC
timer when both the 8254 and the IO-APIC timer pins are enabled. This is
because they route it to both and the result is anded together and the CPU
ends up processing it twice.
This patch changes check_timer to disable the 8254 routing for interrupt 0.
I think it would be safe on all chipsets actually (i tested it on a couple
and it worked everywhere) and Windows seems to do it in a similar way, but
to be conservative this patch only enables this mode on ATI (and adds
options to enable/disable too)
Ported over from a similar x86-64 change.
I reused the ACPI earlyquirk infrastructure for the ATI bridge check, but
tweaked it a bit to work even without ACPI.

Some broken BIOS's had processors disabled, but
same apic id as a valid processor. This causes
acpi_processor_start() to think this disabled
cpu is ok, and croak. So we dont record bad
apicid's anymore.

Linux invokes the AML _PDC method (Processor Driver Capabilities)
to tell the BIOS what features it can handle. While the ACPI
spec says nothing about the OS invoking _PDC multiple times,
doing so with changing bits seems to hopelessly confuse the BIOS
on multiple platforms up to and including crashing the system.
Factor out the _PDC invocation so Linux invokes it only once.

We should zap the low mappings, as soon as possible, so that we can catch
kernel bugs more effectively. Previously early boot had NULL mapped
and didn't trap on NULL references.
This patch introduces boot_level4_pgt, which will always have low identity
addresses mapped. Druing boot, all the processors will use this as their
level4 pgt. On BP, we will switch to init_level4_pgt as soon as we enter C
code and zap the low mappings as soon as we are done with the usage of
identity low mapped addresses. On AP's we will zap the low mappings as
soon as we jump to C code.

Here's a patch that builds on Natalie Protasevich's IRQ compression
patch and tries to work for MPS boots as well as ACPI. It is meant for
a 4-node IBM x460 NUMA box, which was dying because it had interrupt
pins with GSI numbers > NR_IRQS and thus overflowed irq_desc.
The problem is that this system has 270 GSIs (which are 1:1 mapped with
I/O APIC RTEs) and an 8-node box would have 540. This is much bigger
than NR_IRQS (224 for both i386 and x86_64). Also, there aren't enough
vectors to go around. There are about 190 usable vectors, not counting
the reserved ones and the unused vectors at 0x20 to 0x2F. So, my patch
attempts to compress the GSI range and share vectors by sharing IRQs.

I need the following patch to compile -git8 here, otherwise these
files fail to compile (asm/hw_irq.h needs definitions from
linux/irq.h and that file provides the required include ordering).
I did not do a full audit, though there looks to be many other
places that should get the same treatment, if this is the right

arch/i386/oprofile/nmi_timer_int.c includes linux/irq.h... as a way to

Commit 66759a01ad introduced the fix for
time ticking too fast on some boards by disabling one of the doubly
connected timer pins on ATI boards.
However, it ends up being _much_ too broad a brush, and that just makes
some other ATI boards not work at all since they now have no timer
source.
So disable the automatic ATI southbridge detection, and just rely on
people who see this problem disabling it by hand with the option
"disable_timer_pin_1" on the kernel command line.
Maybe somebody can figure out the proper tests at a later date.

i386 generic subarchitecture requires explicit dmi strings or command line
to enable bigsmp mode. The patch below removes that restriction, and uses
bigsmp as soon as it finds more than 8 logical CPUs, Intel processors and
xAPIC support.
